Daughters and Disciples: The Expansive Calling of Women in Christ’s Church

Admittedly, I tend to be an optimist. I’m a glass-half-full, “look at this from a different angle” kind of person. I know that can be annoying at times, especially to my more pragmatic friends.

So when I recently read yet another article on women’s limitations in ministry, I let out an audible (and admittedly overdramatic) sigh.

Look, I understand the conversations about women’s roles in the church run deep. As a pastor’s daughter, a pastor’s wife, a seminary graduate, and a full-time church staff member, I know the topic is nuanced and important. Very important.

But…can we also look at it from a different angle?

When conversations about women in the church arise, the question often becomes: What can’t women do? And we tend to settle there. But perhaps that question itself is too small.

I regularly interact with female seminary students and aspiring ministry leaders, and many are pessimistic about finding a place to serve in the PCA. I understand why. I know many feel they are swimming against a cultural climate that often questions women serving in meaningful leadership roles.

But time and again, I offer them a different story – a more optimistic view. There are pastors and elders across our denomination who deeply value women’s gifts, theological training, wisdom, and leadership. I have met them. I serve alongside them. They exist.

More than that, within a confessional Reformed framework, the church offers women not a narrow hallway but a wide field of meaningful, mission-critical work.

The Biblical Pattern: From the Beginning, Co-Laborers

The vision is not a modern accommodation. It’s biblical.

From the beginning, in Gen. 1-2, Adam and Eve bear God’s image together, and they are commissioned to cultivate and steward creation side by side. From the beginning, there is both order and partnership—distinct callings, yet shared participation in God’s work.

In the New Testament, women are named, commended, and entrusted. Romans 16 alone lists women who were foundational participants in ministry. And in the book of Acts, Priscilla instructs and ministers alongside her husband, Aquila. Lydia opens her home as the birthplace of a church in Philippi.

And we shouldn’t overlook the significance of the fact that in all four gospels, women were the first witnesses of the resurrection. In the first century, women were generally not considered reliable or credible witnesses, and their testimony was often discounted. And yet…Jesus entrusts the announcement of his victory to them, appearing to them first.

The pattern we see isn’t silence and sidelining but participation and partnership. Ordered, yes, but also vibrant and significant. As a confessional denomination, the PCA seeks to order its life according to these biblical patterns.

What the PCA Affirms (and Why That Matters)

The polity of the PCA recognizes two ordinary and perpetual offices – elder and deacon – with elders exercising spiritual oversight and governance and deacons overseeing ministries of service. In keeping with its understanding of Scripture, these ordained offices are reserved for qualified men.

The conviction grows from a desire to submit faithfully to Scripture, not from a desire to diminish the gifts or calling of women in Christ’s church. But here is where an important distinction helps us think clearly: Office is not the same as ministry. And ordination is not the same as usefulness.

Much of the ministry described in the New Testament is not office-based but gift-based and Spirit-empowered among the whole body (Rom. 12; 1 Cor. 12; Eph. 4). The formal offices of elder and deacon are vital to the church’s order and health. But when we open Acts and the Epistles, we quickly discover that the life of the early church was not sustained by these offices alone. It was sustained by the saints as a whole.

House churches were hosted and organized by lay believers, many of whom were women. The week-by-week spread of the gospel happened through conversation, hospitality, prayer, generosity, teaching, encouragement, and witness.

While elders carry particular responsibility for authoritative teaching and oversight, much of the ministry described in the New Testament is not tied to ordination. If we begin to equate “real ministry” with the ordained office only, then the opportunities will seem small. But if we let the New Testament shape our understanding, the field expands dramatically.

The Vast “Yes”: Where Women’s Callings Flourish

Here’s what’s significant - the kingdom of God advances not only through pulpits and presbyteries, but also through the daily ministry of the whole church. This happens around dinner tables, through careful theological study, trained counseling, mentoring relationships, through music and liturgy, and through persistent prayer. These are all places where women are and should be using their giftedness.

If God has called you to ministry, it is both a humbling yet great calling, and there are countless places where women are needed.

Theological Depth and Teaching

We need women willing to go deeper in their theological study. My own seminary education was one of the most stretching and rewarding experiences of my life. We need women who study Scripture seriously, who teach other women and children faithfully, who lead Bible studies well, who write thoughtfully, and who mentor intentionally. Theological literacy in the church does not grow accidentally. Women play a vital role in cultivating it.

Worship and Formation

As a worship director, one of my greatest joys is serving alongside pastors to shape the liturgy and music of the church. There are many gifted women who are needed to help plan services. We need female leaders to train musicians in what it means to lead worship, and we need women to continue to shape the doctrinal vocabulary of the church by writing or introducing solid, theologically sound music.

Mercy and Mission

Mercy ministry is not reserved for ordained leaders alone. We need women to be engaged in community outreach, counseling, and discipleship. About half of every church is female, and many of these women long for wise, trained female counsel.

Spiritual Motherhood

The church desperately needs women who are willing to engage in intergenerational discipleship. Whether through structured mentoring or informal rhythms of prayer and presence, women are uniquely positioned to cultivate spiritual maturity in other women (Titus 2).

None of these are “secondary” contributions. They are kingdom-advancing and church-shaping callings. A healthy confessional church should be the safest and richest place for a woman to grow and serve.

A Vision Forward: Cultivating a Culture of Optimism

Just a brief encouragement to my brothers who serve faithfully in our churches. If we want women to flourish in ministry, intentionality matters.

Invite women into theological conversations. Ask women on your staff to attend General Assembly. Encourage formal training and create visible pathways for service. And for the women serving in your midst – whether in an official or unofficial capacity—a word of gratitude goes a long way in reminding them they are seen and their work is valued.

If the next generation of female church leaders only hears the “no,” we have failed to sing out the fullness of the “yes” that Scripture itself celebrates.

God’s church is a household full of meaningful labor. I’m deeply encouraged by the many women in the PCA who are not waiting on the sidelines but who are already building, teaching, singing, discipling, and strengthening Christ’s bride.

I’m grateful for Scripture – for its clarity, order, and its beauty. And I’m grateful for the expansive mercy of God, who calls both men and women to serve in his church. The field is wide, the harvest is plentiful, and there is joyful work to be done for sons and daughters alike.
